1 The Problem

pH is a symptom. Calcium is the cure.

A soil test pH number hides what's really going on. The real issue is calcium base saturation — and it drives everything from phosphorus availability to root depth to nodulation in beans.

Why low calcium destroys yield

When calcium base saturation drops, hydrogen takes those open receptor sites instead. That looks like "low pH" on your test, but the actual damage is this:

  • Phosphorus gets tied up. P binds to iron and aluminum instead of calcium, becoming plant-unavailable. Iowa State data shows 50%+ of fertilizer wasted when base saturation is in the 50s.
  • Nitrogen loses efficiency for the same reasons — you're paying for fertilizer the crop can't reach.
  • Soil tightens up. Calcium drives flocculation. Without it, you lose porosity, water infiltration, and root depth.
  • Soybeans can't fix nitrogen. Nodulation depends on calcium supply.
The sweet spot
65–75% calcium base saturation is where most soils perform best. Around 75% is "golden."

ProCal vs. Advanced Cal — which one fits your farm?

Both deliver plant-available chelated calcium through your sprayer. The difference is what rides along with it.

Same core mode of action as lime — faster.

Lime is calcium carbonate. It can take months to a year to break down. We heat calcium carbonate in a kiln, split the bond, and chelate the calcium so it stays plant-available and doesn't reattach.

That means:

  • Predictable base saturation shift (~1 gallon/ac raises base saturation ~5% on a 10 CEC soil)
  • Runs through your sprayer — no spreader, no corrosion, no blow-off
  • Apply fall, spring, or post-emerge (before V4/V5)
  • Lasts 3–4 years, same as dry lime
  • Seed safe in-furrow; mixable with straight 28/32 nitrogen
⚠ Don't mix with
Phosphorus (10-34-0, DAP in solution) or sulfur (UAN+S, AMS). Negative ions bind to calcium and plug tips. Always jar test.
